Folks around here just call it Chickasaw. Not ‘the city of Chickasaw’ — just Chickasaw. Two square miles tucked between the river and Whistler, with enough history packed into those streets to fill a museum. The Gulf Shipbuilding Corporation built this town during World War II — rows of worker cottages along Iroquois Avenue and Jackson Street that are still standing eighty years later. Those homes were built tough, but eighty Gulf Coast summers will test anything.

If you live off Craft Highway or back behind the civic center, you know what happens every spring. The oaks and magnolias dump pollen like it’s their job. By April, your porch railing is yellow, your windows look foggy, and the north side of your house is turning green where the shade keeps things damp. That’s not dirt you can hose off with a garden hose — that’s algae setting up shop. And once it gets a foothold, it spreads fast in this humidity.

Why Chickasaw Homes Need a Different Approach

You can’t treat a 1940s shipyard cottage the same way you’d treat a new vinyl-sided house in West Mobile. The original wood siding on homes in the historic district — the ones along Iroquois, down Jefferson Street, around Gulf Village — that wood has character, but it’s also been through decades of weather. High-pressure washing would splinter it, force water behind the boards, and strip whatever original paint is left. We don’t do that.

We soft wash. That means low pressure — about what comes out of your garden hose — combined with a biodegradable cleaning solution that kills algae, mold, and mildew at the root. The solution does the work, not the force. For the brick ranches along Whistler Road and the newer builds near Chickasaw Park, we can use a bit more pressure on the concrete and driveways, but we still keep it gentle on the siding and trim.

The other thing about Chickasaw — and nobody talks about this — is the industrial particulate. Being this close to the waterfront and the old shipyard sites, homes on the east side of town get a fine film of environmental buildup on their windows and siding. It mixes with morning dew and creates a grimy layer that regular rain won’t wash off. Our cleaning solutions break that down without harsh chemicals that would damage your landscaping.
