Salt air, sand, and Gulf humidity — your island home needs more than a garden hose.
If you live on Dauphin Island — or own a rental here — you already know. That three-mile bridge brings you to a different world. Fourteen miles of barrier island, the Audubon Bird Sanctuary on the east end, Fort Gaines guarding the pass, and some of the quietest beaches on the Gulf Coast. But the same salt air that makes everything smell like vacation is eating your home alive. It clouds your windows, corrodes your metal fixtures, and turns your deck railings chalky white.
The West End is where most of the beach houses sit — past where the paved road ends, out on stilts overlooking the Gulf. The East End has the older homes, the year-round residents, the folks who stay through hurricane season and deal with whatever the Gulf throws at them. Both sides have the same problem: salt spray doesn’t take a day off. It deposits a mineral film on every exterior surface, and if you don’t clean it regularly, it accelerates the breakdown of paint, wood, and metal. We’ve seen deck screws corroded to nothing in three years on homes that weren’t maintained.
You can’t clean a Dauphin Island home the same way you’d clean one in Midtown Mobile. The salt changes everything. Regular pressure washing can actually drive salt crystals deeper into wood grain, making the problem worse. We use a fresh-water rinse system combined with salt-neutralizing solutions that dissolve the mineral deposits before we wash them away. It’s an extra step, but on the island, it’s the only way to do it right.
Stilt homes — and most of the West End is on stilts — present their own challenge. We bring extension equipment that reaches second and third-story siding, windows, and soffits without needing to set up scaffolding on sand. The underside of stilt homes collects moisture, cobwebs, and salt crust that most people never think to clean until it starts flaking off onto their cars parked underneath.
Window cleaning on the island is a different animal too. Sand gets into the tracks and grinds against the glass every time you open and close them. We clean the tracks, the frames, and the glass — inside and out — so your windows actually slide smooth again and you can see the Gulf clearly instead of through a haze of salt film.
